This place is amazing. It's great because it's not close to the plaza at all, so you don't have to worry about traffic. Plus there is a huge outdoor patio. I ordered the carne adovado burrito with red chile. It is the best I've ever had in Taos. They put pork in both of their chiles, but they also offer a vegetarian green chile. This is going to be my new go-to for New Mexican cuisine.

Well not bad, typical New Mexico cuisine, beans not refried and NO salt on anything. In my opinion, seafood enchiladas need a light cream sauce, not green chili! Although not bad, probably won't be back. Sopapilla's good and huge!

The pork adovada is incredible. I make a point to get whenever I'm in town. Fresh sopapillas and honey with the meal. Very attentive staff. No liquor license (we brought a bottle, but were told they were too close to the church to serve it). Not a big deal for food this good.

Had the absolute best seafood enchiladas with vegetarian green chile sauce today that I have ever had. I just did not want the meal to end until I saw the gigantic sopapillas. Do not let the place fool you from the outside. Inside it is warm and comfortable and the service is great.

We have had a favorite restaurant here for years. We're from out of state. We always make a point to try a new place as well as our favorite during our visit. TODAY WE FOUND A NEW FAVORITE!! Absolutely delicious! And sopapillas as big as your head !

This is the best New Mexican food in Northern New Mexico. The red chile sauce is sooo good. The service is great. It's a family owned business, and you can see that they really take pride in their work. A must stop in Taos County.

Stuffed sopaipilla with shredded beef and red chile. So delicious. I'm not the expert, but this was the most authentic-ish local food we had in our weeklong visit. The room is all tile and adobe, so lots of echo, which makes you speak softly. The service was attentive. The church next door is also worth looking at.

Great, friendly and attentive staff. I do think it sucks to have to pay for chips and salsa since the standard is to have them gratis in just about every other Mexican food restaurant and I'm a cheapskate. Another downside is that there isn't any alcohol served so no margaritas with my meal. I guess I could stand to dry out for a night. However take all of this into account and stop by anyway. The food is simply amazing. It's my new stop for Mexican food in Taos.

This place was the first stop we made on our visit to Taos, New Mexico. The staff greeted us right away and were very friendly. We were seated right away. We ordered chips and salsa which was served with warm chips. Our food was brought out shorty after that and everything was so delicious. I had a combination plate with a tamale, chili relleno and cheese enchilada with red chili. The chili was well seasoned. This was the best meal I had in Taos. I can't wait to go back and eat there again.

Based on a recommendation, we decided to try Ranchos Plaza Grill. I ordered the carne adovada, and frankly, it was pretty gross due to the meat having gristle in every single bite. After spitting multiple bites gone wrong into a napkin, I ended up picking out all the pork and eating everything else. My meal left me feeling disappointed after hearing such praise for this restaurant. Everything else - the red and green chile that smothered it, the posole, the sopapillas, even the lemonade was great. I think I ordered the wrong thing, and I would like to go back and try something else. They were very crowded and service was a bit slow, but the staff was friendly and and observant. Our waitress checked on us several times. The atmosphere is fantastic and authentic with it's uneven floors and adobe. My advice to anyone wanting to eat here is to do it, but not order the carne adovada.

Definitely the most authentic Northern New Mexican food around. It's set on the old Ranchos de Taos plaza and when you walk in it feels like stepping back in time. Thick adobe walls, low ceilings, warm and welcoming staff. The chile here is the most amazing. I loved the red but the green floored me, haven't liked a green that much in a while. I had the hue is rancheros christmas and my mom had the chile replenishment green. Both were fantastic, big portions, big fluffy sopapillas, lots of yumminess. Super nice patio! If you're looking for a beer go elsewhere because it has none, perhaps due to sharing campus with the San Francisco de Asis Mission church.

One of the best places I have ever eaten. Last summer. I had a beef taco, and a chile relleno. Everything I tasted was literally the best mexican I have ever had. All the sauces are to die for. They don't serve beer, and it's fortunate, because otherwise I would move there.

Excellent New Mexican food. Delicious green sauce and the sopapillas were huge, pillow like fried to perfection. We went back the following day to make sure that our first impression was correct and because the food was so good. The first day My wife got a combo plate with a tamale (very very good), a cheese enchilada (good flavor), and a beef taco (excellent). I got a chicken stuffed sopapilla (excellent as well). The second day my wife got the same plate minus the taco (too much food the day before so needed to eliminate something) and I made up for her choice by getting a beef taco plate. The beef tacos are so good. The meat isn't ground but shredded, tender and deeply flavorful. The green chile sauce here is excellent, spicy but not so much so that you can't taste your food. The guac is fresh and has a nice amount of lime. Many of the reviews talk about a plain atmosphere and slow service.. I suspect these people rarely get out of the city and are used to chain restaurants. The decor is inviting and clean. Nice artwork from locals on the walls and some painted murals. The staff may have been a little slow but this is more about a relaxed environment than about neglecting your needs. Welcome to the south. Relax. Sip some more tea and enjoy your surroundings for a few minutes. We will be back as much as we can given that this restaurant is 12 hours from our home.

We ate lunch here on our arrival in Taos. It was delicious. We had the best guacamole of our entire trip to New Mexico. The citrus flavor in it was fantastic. Everything else was equally tasty. Don't miss it if you visit here.

As a native New Mexican, I have to say that this place is one of my favorites to get amazing and authentic New Mexican cuisine. You absolutely can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Even the salads (though not traditional NM cuisine) are good!

Excellent red chili sauce!!! The green is also good and spicy! All food was excellent - adobada enchiladas, tamales, chili relleno, and sopapilla filled with adobada. About $12 for large portions. Kids plates under $4. Chips and salsa was $5 - although the salsa was really good - the portions are enough where you don't need it. Nice outside seating patio too!

We were seated quickly and the service was very good. The staff were attentive and helpful. The food was excellent--we're very critical when it comes to Mexican food and we were blown away by the quality and taste. The sopaipillas were included and we had to take extras for breakfast. We paid $35 for three people before the tip, would highly recommend.

Had a wonderful late lunch at the Rancho Plaza Grill today. They had just opened and we were the first ones in the door. Had the place to ourselves. The wait staff was attentive and friendly. The food was delicious. We would definitely go back.

Another 5 star review for Ranchos Plaza Grill. I found out about this place by asking an old shopkeeper in Taos where the best Mexican food was. Turns out it's just outside of Taos, down highway 68 in "Ranchos de Taos." We tried a little bit of everything and it was all GREAT! I absolutely stuffed myself. I'm not new to Mexican food -- and this was the real, flavorful, deal. The tacos had a wonderful thin and crispy shell with perfectly marinated shredded beef and the chile rellenos were big on the fresh green chile pepper and easy on the batter. Authentic. Excellent!

I live in In Arroyo Hondo for the summer of 2014, just North of Taos and have tried multiple Mexican/New Mexican restaurants in the area Ranchos Plaza Grill has been by far one of the best in the area. I will hazard to say that it has been one of the best Mexican restaurants I have enjoyed in my life. It is a little bit farther from the center of town (Taos). And you do not have alcohol (This restaurant shares a courtyard with a historic Adobe Church) However the food is phenomenal (Try the Stuffed Sopaipilla). Ranchos Plaza Grill is better than: Guadalajara, Orlandos, Bellas, Michaels, Taos Diner, and Toribios combined. (And I love most of those places too with the exception of Guadalajara).

My goodness this place is good. Top notch, friendly service and very yummy food. The guacamole and salsa were fresh and delicious, if not quite as spicy as I would like them. My chicken enchiladas were equally good--with outstanding red and green chile, and the sides of beans, rice and sopapillas were superb. Be forewarned, there is no alcohol of any kind served at this restaurant, as it is on the site of a church, but don't let that discourage you...the food is fantastic.

I went here for tamales and I was not disappointed. The place is a bit of a drive from the Taos Plaza area but worth it! Dinner was amazingly good, servers extremely pleasant. Clean, casual and well ... the Sopapillas are Over The MOON goodness! Like a perfectly puffy elephant ear / Indian fry bread fusion drizzled with honey. I'm still thinking about it! Note: no liquor license but the food and service makes up for the lack of a margarita with dinner ;o)

Absolutely worth the drive from Santa Fe!!!! We stopped by to take pictures of the church next door to this restaurant on the way up to Taos Pueblo. My foodie spider sense kicked in when we drove by this. We ended up coming back when our trip to Tiwa Kitchen was thwarted by being closed. We stopped by here on the way back to Santa Fe and had an AMAZING experience. My wife and I live in San Francisco and eat a tremendous number of avocados. I have, however, never had guacamole quite this good. My enchiladas were over the top, as were the big basket of sopas placed on the table. All six of us had nothing but amazing meals at this restaurant. I wish I could go back NOW!! This is a must eat restaurant and fully deserving of their 5 star average rating.

Ranchos Plaza Grill is right next to the back of the San Francisco de Asis Mission Church, just south of Taos. We love this place. This is quintessential Northern New Mexico cuisine. Red chile sauce extradinaire! The enchiladas, the sopapillas, the interior, the neighborhood, are as good as it gets. Having a meal on the patio on a gorgeous day would be on my top ten things to do on a visit to New Mexico list. Be sure to check out the Two Graces store across the parking lot. Our only problem is that many times we have arrived hungry, already drooling in anticipatiion of carne adovado, enchiladas and sopapillas only to find it CLOSED. A couple weeks ago I carefully wrote down the hours to keep on hand and noticed that according to their signs they should have been closed at the time I was writing. Confusing! The interior is very interesting, if you have to eat inside. It is OLD, very Taos. Lots of local art.

For authentic Northern New Mexican food, this is the place to go to. My personal favorite are the green chili veggie enchiladas.(which I posted a pic of) the restaurant is located right next to the famous Saint Francis church. So be prepared to wait if you go in on a Sunday.

Delicious! Drove across town to try it and loved it. Had the enchilada-taco combo with red sauce. Taco was with shredded beef and I didn't care for it. Enchilada was delicious. My wife had chile relleno and it was great too. Chips/Salsa were extra but the salsa was fabulous and spicy. Ordered a second salsa for our meal. Worth the drive.....

I really expected to see Clint Eastwood in his High Plains drifter serape ambling into this cafe. With it's big adobe church and small village buildings it really looks like the kind of place that the Magnificent Seven would be hanging out at. This is by far the best SouthWest meal we had in Taos. Yes, I went out on that limb and said The Best. The adovado enchilda is delicious, the red chile is spicy with a bit of smokiness. And the ubquitious Sopapillas are by far the most memorable I've had. Fluffy and chewy with a just a little crunch. We ate here twice and I'd seriously consider the 8 hours of travel from Seattle to eat her again, just for one more Sopapilla.

4.5 Stars: The was a great place. My two kids, my husband and I all went. We ordered the tacos, chiles rellenos, carne adobada enchiladas, and tamales. All were very good. And then for dessert, the sopapilla with honey was delicious. Also, the service and ambience was great. You won't be disappointed.
